More than 130 participants from 21 different countries, about one third of which ECRs and/or DCRs, participated in the 8^th PATA Days in New Zealand. The meeting started with an icebreaker on 12 November, followed by a field trip on 13 November to visit the northern surface ruptures of the M7.8 earthquake of November 2016. After that, three days were devoted to scientific presentations, poster sessions, and discussion. A public lecture by Phaedra Upton, Daniela Pantosti, Ursula Cochran, Caroline Orchiston, and Tom Rockwell attracted a large number of Blenheim residents. more

The next TSK meeting (Tektonik – Strukturgeologie – Kristallingeologie) will be held in Jena, Germany, from 19-25 March, 2018. We have put together a great programme, including 2 days of workshops (photogrammetry, paleoseismology, balanced X-sections etc.), two wonderful field trips, and interesting sessions. If this isn’t convincing enough, check out the list of invited speakers! Come and  visit me in Jena!

Dear friends and colleagues,

The PATA Days will return to Europe next year! Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Thessaloniki Earthquakes, the meeting will be held in Greece from 25-30 June, 2018. Save the dates! Spyros Pavlides and Alex Chatzipetros will organize the scientific sessions from 25-27 June, and a summer school is planned for 28-30 June. After visiting the active faults of the US (2016) and New Zealand (2017), we will see some great sites in northern Greece. After that we plan to explore what active tectonics do look like in Argentina and Chile in 2020 (Huge thrusts!). More information and a 1st circular will follow very soon. A paleoseismological field workshop on “Soft-sediment deformation structures and palaeoseismic phenomena in the South-eastern Baltic Region” will be held in Lithuania from 17-21 Septmeber, 2018. The workshop is organized by the Lithuanian Geological Survey, the Geological Society of Lithuania, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, and Klaipėda University, Lithuania. more

The 5th International Colloquium on Historical Earthquakes, Paleoseismology, Neotectonics and Seismic Hazard will be held from 11-13 October, 2017, in Hannover, Germany at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). Deadline: 10 September!

Dear friends and colleagues,

We are happy to announce that our Special Issue from the 2015 PATA Days in Fucino is finally published in Quaternary International. This wonderful workshop commemorated the centenary of the 1915 Fucino Earthquake, and
we have seen some great active faults in the Central Apennines
and palaeoseismological research sites during the field trips. The meeting was organized by ISPRA, INGV and University of Insubria and promoted by INQUA TERPRO. more

The “Great 1117 Veronese Earthquake” was one of the strongest events that hit Northern Italy in historical times. Many aspects of this earthquake are still debated, but archaeological sources, historical archives, and geological records can help to better understand what had happened near Verona 900 years ago. On 20 January, 2017, a conference on the 1117 Veronese Earthquake took place in Venice, bringing together archaeologists, historians and earth scientists. The presentations were given in Italian, but Paolo Forlin from the Armedea project provides an English summary of the meeting. Read his highly interesting article here. more

We are pleased to announce new dates for the 2017 PATA Days Meeting: Monday 13th – Thursday 16th November, 2017.

The meeting will be held in Blenheim, at the top of the South Island, at the northern end of the Marlborough Fault System and 30 km above the southern Hikurangi subduction zone. The first full day of the meeting will be a field trip to view some of the northern fault ruptures of the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. This will be followed by three days of talks and presentations at conference venues in Ward and Blenheim. Meeting attendees are advised to arrive in Blenheim by the 12 November, and to arrange accommodation in Blenheim for 5 nights (12 – 17 November). There will also be an optional post-meeting field trip from Friday 17 – Sunday 19 November. The post-meeting field trip will start in Blenheim and finish in Christchurch. The meeting is supported by INQUA and the main annual event of the IFG EGSHaz.

An interesting pre-EGU field trip will be organised by colleagues from the University of Vienna, focussing on some structural interesting outcrops near Vienna. Here is the announcement from Anna Rogowitz:

The trip aims to provide a brief outlook on the processes occurring in orogenic root domains on the example of the Bohemian Massif in Austria. Special focus will be given to deformation structures and the influence of partial melting on deformation localization. The excellent exposures in the Bohemian Massif gives a great opportunity to study the interplay between chemical changes and deformation processes in the lower crust. Additionally the high amount of migmatisation in some areas of the Moldanubian domain allows for studying the influence of melt on deformation processes as well as the composition of the host rock on melt formation and strain partitioning between rocks of different composition and rheology. more
