A new Special Issue has just been published in the Journal of South American Earth Sciences: Hazardous Faults in Latin America. The issue contains 16 research papers and an editorial. It was edited by Carlos Costa and Laurence Audin. The issue collects highly interesting contributions from all across the continent. Although subduction megaquakes on the Chilean Trench come with the highest magnitudes, onshore faults pose a significant hazard and historical events have had catastrophic consequences. Also, studying crustal earthquakes and faults is a pre-requisite for understanding crustal deformation, mountain building, and the landscape response to tectonics. Read the Special Issue now, because all papers are free to access via ScienceDirect until 20 Jan 2022.

Special Issue in Applied Sciences: “The Contribution of Geology and Geomatics to Seismic Hazard and Earthquake Engineering”
2020-10-19 | in Paper | one responseOur colleagues Javier Elez and Jorge L. Giner-Robles invite contributions to a Special Issue in the journal Applied Sciences:
moreIn recent decades, a prominent body of knowledge related to the geology of the earthquakes has provided new insights into seismic phenomena. The study of geology of present earthquakes allows a better understanding of the whole set of natural processes involved. The study of events from the past allows providing more comprehensive data within the temporal range (recurrence periods) of the seismic cycle and therefore completing the seismic catalogues and incorporating long-term data into seismic hazard assessment. The introduction of geological analysis of earthquakes, mainly based on the application of the Environmental Seismic Intensity Scale (ESI-07), also allows the parameterization of environmental earthquake effects and the emergence of multiple modeling procedures to assess intensity, hazard, risk, emergency scenarios, etc., most of them based on the application of GIS technologies.
The objective of this Special Issue on “The Contribution of Geology and Geomatics to Seismic Hazard and Earthquake Engineering” is to provide the latest advances, uses, and case studies related to the multiple applications of geological analysis of earthquakes.

Special Issue “The November 23rd, 1980 Irpinia-Lucania, Southern Italy Earthquake: Insights and Reviews 40 Years Later”
2020-06-17 | in PaperThe 1980 Irpinia Earthquake with a magnitude of Mw6.9 was one of the strongest and deadliest earthquakes in Italy in the 20th Century. Now, 40 years later, a special issue is dedicated to this event. Guest editors Sabina Porfido, Giuliana Alessio, Germana Gaudiosi, Rosa Nappi, and Alessandro Michetti invited papers for their special issue in Geosciences. Deadline for submission is 30 October, 2020.

Call for papers: Special Issue on Tectonics of Oblique Plate Boundary Settings
2014-11-12 | in PaperOur colleague Manuel Díaz-Azpiroz from Seville and his colleeagues will be guest editor of a special issue on “Tectonics of Oblique Plate Boundary Settings”, which is going to be published in Tectonophysics.
Everyone who is interested to participate may submit a manuscript. The Special Issue aims on contributions about different aspects of the study of convergent and divergent, ancient and active oblique plate boundary systems, including analytical, numerical and analogue modelling methods, as well as field-based analyses of natural cases. Innovative approaches that exploit new analysis techniques (3D geophysical modelling, space geodesy-based kinematics, etc.) or methods combining structural geology with geophysics, petrology, geomorphology or stratigraphy are also welcomed. Through this thematic volume of Tectonophysics, the progress in the understanding of the kinematics and dynamics of oblique plate boundaries will be addressed and innovative and/or multidisciplinary research methods that provide new insights into the 3D deformation inherently linked to these systems will be promoted.

Call for papers: Regional moment tensors and stress field in South and Central America
2014-11-10 | in PaperOur colleague Franck Audemard spread the news that a special issue of the Journal of South American Earth Sciences (SAMES) will be published on “Regional moment tensors and stress field in South and Central America”. Given the success of the RMTS (Regional Moment-Tensor Solution) session in the IASPEI Regional Assembly in Bogotá, last July, a special issue is now planned on all aspects of moment-tensors and stress field. more

Special Issue in NHESS on marine and lake paleoseismology
2014-04-01 | in PaperAt the end of last year, NHESS published a Special Issue on marine and lake paleoseismology. The volume 154 is an outcome of the ESF meeting Submarine Paleoseismology: The Offshore Search of Large Holocene Earthquakes that was held in
Austria in September, 2010. Guest editors are D. Pantosti, E. Gràcia, G. Lamarche, and H. Nelson. The Special Issue is open access and contains 16 research papers on all kinds of research on paleoseismology offshore. Some of the papers have been published as early as 2012, but others came out few weeks ago. more -
Special Issue in Annals of Geophysics – Earthquake geology: science, society and critical facilities (open access)
2014-02-21 | in Corinth 2011, PaperThe latest issue of Annals of Geophysics is devoted to Earthquake geology: science, society and critical facilities. Vol 56 (6) is a Special Volume, and I am proud to say it’s our volume! Finally, 14 papers are included in this issue, most of them authored by early career researchers (ECRs). The papers are based on work presented at the 2nd INQUA meeting on Active Tectonics, Earthquake Geology, Archaeology and Engineering in Corinth, Greece, 2011. The issue was edited by Christoph Grützner, Salvatore Barba, Ioannis Papanikolaou and Raul Pérez-López and all papers are open access! more
