Bad news – the PATA Days in Chile are cancelled. The ongoing Corona crisis does not allow for proper planning and many restrictions are still in place. Visitors to Chile might need to quarantine, air travel might be restricted, and it is not clear when larger gatherings will become possible again. Postponing the PATA Days is not an option, because the preparations for PATA2022 in France are already making progress (update soon!). A huge thanks to the organisers for trying so hard and for all the work they have put into the organisation so far! Great job, team Chile! We hope that one day we can all enjoy your hospitality and the wonderful geology. This is perhaps a good time to watch again the virtual PATA2020 short meeting. You can also book your hotels here and submit the short abstracts. There’s only a limited number of places due to the remote venue in a wonderful resort hotel – first come, first served. The PATA Days (Paleoseismology, Active Tectonics, Archaeoseismology) is the largest int’l meeting for the paleoseismology community and supported by INQUA. In Chile, a lot of tsunami science will of course also happen.

A competitive fully-funded PhD project is currently being advertised on Holocene palaeoseismicity and sea-level change in Chile at Northumbria University, UK in the Department of Geography. The studentship funding includes a three-year stipend and funding is available to UK and international students. Application deadline is 20 January 2017 (PhD start date is 2 October 2017). The Latin American Association of Tectonics has recently been founded in order “…to help the exchange of ideas and facilitate collaborations of tectonic studies in South America. The Latin American Association of Tectonics consists of researchers from universities and institutes interested in South America tectonic studies, and regarding Andean or pre-Andean tectonics.” See their website here. They organise the 1st South American Tectonic Symposium to take place from 16-20 November, 2016, in Santiago (Chile). The event will be held at the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, University of Chile in Santiago, Chile. more

The 16 World Conference on Earthquake Engineering will be held from 9-13 January, 2017, in Santiago de Chile. Note that the deadline for short abstracts submission is 23 November, 2015! Abstracts can be submitted via this link.

The gathering of the South American Neotectonic Group took place at the Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago as a departure point of the scheduled activities of the “Inventory of Hazardous Structures of South America” project, a topic layer of the South America Risk Assessment (SARA) effort (see previous post at here). This convocation also hosted a meeting of the INQUA SAm-GeoQuat IFG and the 1311 Project.

A nice short discussion about the Lorito et al., 2011 paper regarding the seismic gap at the Chilean coast and seismic slip during the 2010 earthquake, can be found at Highly Allochthonous. The discussion highlights the paper findings under the glance of the recent Bio-Bio earthquake from Friday, which took place in this so called Darwin gap.

Today on Friday, 11 February, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred offshore in Chile near Concepcion at  36.5° S and 73° W in a depth of 28km. The MMI at the nearby large cities was reported by the USGS with V.

Update: The magnitude was corrected to 6.8. The earthquake was followed one hour later by a further event with a magnitude of 5.3 and 4 hours later again by a more shallow 6.3.
