The 10th PATA Days, which were planned for September 2019 in Israel, have to be cancelled. The next regular PATA meeting will therefore be held in Chile 2020. This is the bad news. The good news is that there will be a student summer school organized by the IFG EGSHaz from 24-27 September, 2019, in Prague (Czech Republic). Petra Štěpančíková and her team are currently working on the schedule. The summer school will mainly address students and PhD students interested in earthquake geology, paleoseismology, and tectonic geomorphology. We will likely have two days of lectures & exercises and two days of field trips. More information will be available soon, so stay tuned.

Please make sure to consider attending the INQUA Congress in Dublin (25-31 July, 2019). There will be three sessions organized by our IFG:

• Earthquake Geology and Seismic Hazards: from earthquake mapping of historical and prehistoric earthquakes to paleoseismology (Ioannis Papanikolaou, Stéphane Baize, Christoph Grützner)
• Paleoseismology of plate interiors under Pleistocene climate changes (Klaus Reicherter, Petra Štěpančíková, Małgorzata Pisarska-Jamroży)
• Development of soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) and differences between non-seismic and seismic structures (Małgorzata
  (Gosia) Pisarska-Jamroży, A.J. Tom van Loon, Barbara Woronko, Andreas Börner)

• Subduction zone palaeoseismology (Emma Hocking, Ed Garrett, Jasper Moernaut)

A new issue of Quaternary Perspectives, the INQUA newsletter edited by Lyudmila Shumilovskikh, is out now. QP 25(1) includes a great report by Neta Wechsler on the 2017 PATA Days in New Zealand, more info about the 2019 PATA Days to be held in Israel, and a report on the Int’l Field Trip “From 1997 to 2016: three destructive earthquakes along the Central Apennine fault system”, 19 – 22 July 2017, Italy. Allan Ashworth informs in his INQUA president’s report about the changes that lie ahead and the upcoming challenges in re-structuring INQUA. Plus, there are interesting news on other potentially earthquake-related groups and projects such as 1701P (Late Quaternary records of coastal inundation due to earth surface deformation, tsunami, and storms), PALSEA2, HOLSEA, and GEODUST. The current issue of Quaternary Perspectives can be downloaded here (PDF, 2.57 MB) and will soon be archived at the new INQUA website (check it out!).

Becoming a member doesn’t lead to any obligations, but comes with two advantages:
1) You will be informed about TERPRO news every now and then;
2) You’ll have the right to vote for the new TERPRO leadership!

There are a couple of changes ahead of us, let’s make sure the earthquake community makes itself heard. During the past years, INQUA-TERPRO has always supported our PATA Days meetings by sponsoring travel grants for

We are pleased to announce new dates for the 2017 PATA Days Meeting: Monday 13th – Thursday 16th November, 2017.

The meeting will be held in Blenheim, at the top of the South Island, at the northern end of the Marlborough Fault System and 30 km above the southern Hikurangi subduction zone. The first full day of the meeting will be a field trip to view some of the northern fault ruptures of the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. This will be followed by three days of talks and presentations at conference venues in Ward and Blenheim. Meeting attendees are advised to arrive in Blenheim by the 12 November, and to arrange accommodation in Blenheim for 5 nights (12 – 17 November). There will also be an optional post-meeting field trip from Friday 17 – Sunday 19 November. The post-meeting field trip will start in Blenheim and finish in Christchurch. The meeting is supported by INQUA and the main annual event of the IFG EGSHaz.

If you are interested in visiting the epicentral areas of the recent earthquakes in the Central Apennines, Italy, this is your chance: A four days field trip will be held from 19-22 July, 2017, led by researchers who have studied the earthquake effects in detail. The trip focusses on the fault system that ruptured during the 1997 Umbria Marche, 2009 L’Aquila, and 2016 Norcia events. The trip is organised by scientists from Italy, France, UK, and Greece, and supported by a number of universities, state agencies, and INQUA, with the Università di Camerino as the main coordinator.

The INQUA 2015 congress in Nagoya will not only be the place to catch up with latest science news, but also to elect new commissions and project leaders and to plan and co-ordinate the ongoing activities for the inter-congress period. Therefore, think about joining the relevant business meeting! INQUA is organized in several commissions, of which TERPRO (Terrestrial Processes) is the one which covers paleoseismology, active tectonics and tectonic geomorphology. The IFG Palacte (Int’l Focus Group Paleosesimology/active tectonics) is a sub-organization of TERPRO itself. The TERPRO Business Meeting will be held on the evening (19:00-20:30) of Tue, 28 July in room 431, and will focus on the new Commission structure and programs for the intercongress period 2015 – 2019. more

The gathering of the South American Neotectonic Group took place at the Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago as a departure point of the scheduled activities of the “Inventory of Hazardous Structures of South America” project, a topic layer of the South America Risk Assessment (SARA) effort (see previous post at here). This convocation also hosted a meeting of the INQUA SAm-GeoQuat IFG and the 1311 Project.

The EEE Metrics Project & IFG Paleoseismology and Active Tectonics will host two paleoseismology sessions at the XIX INQUA 2015 in Japan. The congress will be held in Nagoya from 27 July – 2 August. Deadline for abstract submission and travel grant application is 20 December, 2014, deadline for early bird registration is 28 February 2015. more
