Two open positions at NOAA/NWS/Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu, HI
2023-04-11 | in JobsJonathan Weiss informed me about these two interesting positions in Honolulu:
The NOAA/NWS/Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Honolulu, Hawaii has openings for two duty scientists that are now being advertised on USAJOBS with a closing date of April 24, 2023. The positions are at the GS-12 and GS-13 level depending on candidate qualifications and are for either geophysicists, oceanographers, or physical scientists who want to work in a real-time operational environment and conduct applied research related to natural hazards.
Destructive tsunamis are rare – major events occur only a few times each century – and we don’t know in advance when one will be generated. The critical work begins when PTWC seismic alarms sound. Duty scientists quickly assess the earthquake location and size, issue warning messages to nearby coastal communities, and conduct further analysis to determine source mechanism details, which are used as input to numerical tsunami forecast models. Data from sea-level stations confirm tsunami generation and additional messages with forecasts and observations are issued to responsible agencies, the media, and the public. In addition to 24/7 monitoring of global seismic, volcanic, and ocean activity, PTWC scientists apply their scientific and technical skills to advancing global tsunami warning capabilities by improving the speed and accuracy of tsunami source detection and characterization, the quality of tsunami models and forecasts, and the efficacy of warning dissemination. PTWC also conducts education and outreach to partners and the public.
If you are intrigued by the earth and ocean and want to use your knowledge to save lives and property from the hazardous impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis, consider applying for these positions and/or distribute this announcement to potentially interested and qualified colleagues.Unfortunately, the positions are for US citizens only.

Postdoc position in Upper Plate Deformation at UNAM, Mexico City
2021-01-14 | in JobsThe following open position might be of interest to the Active tectonics and
Paleoseismology community:
moreUNAM is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant for a 12 month fixed term appointment working on the exciting UNAM-CONACYT-funded project on “Spatial and Temporal Variations of Upper Plate Deformation across the Guerrero portion of the Mexican Subduction Zone” at the Institute of Geography and the Tsunami and Paleoseismology Laboratory, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City Campus. The candidate will pursue fundamental and applied research into the assessment of both temporal and spatial vertical crustal deformation associated with both slow (interseismic) and rapid (coseismic) crustal deformation across the inner forearc region of the central Mexican subduction zone on the Guerrero sector, where the Cocos plate underthrusts the North American plate. The candidate will be responsible for the development and execution of laboratory and field research, conduct studies to develop a model of long-term deformation, coseismic deformation and earthquake/tsunami chronology, writing reports and papers.

PhD position at GFZ Potsdam in Active Tectonics
2020-09-24 | in JobsAn interesting PhD position is open at GFZ Potsdam in the framework of the CRC1211- “Earth: evolution at the dry limit”. CRC1211 has the objective to study the mutual evolutionary relationships between earth surface processes and biota in arid to hyperarid conditions. Within the framework of project C05 “Adaptation of drainage to tectonic forcing”, the history of the macro‐scale drainages of the Atacama Desert will be examined using cosmogenic nuclide and amphipod speciation chronologies, combined with topographic analysis and kinematic modelling. Findings will be compared to the established broad‐scale tectonic and climatic context. More information and the link to the ad can be found here. Deadline for application is 15th October 2020. For further queries relating to the role’s responsibilities you can contact Dr. Pia Victor by email (pia.victor@gfz-potsdam.de).
