  • EGU 2019 abstract deadline approaching

As every year just after the holidays, the abstract deadline for the EGU General Assembly in Vienna (April 7-12, 2019)  is approaching.  This year, it is on Thursday, 10 January 2019, 13:00 Central European Time.

This year, it seems that there is a strong focus on Earthquake Tectonics and Crustral Deformation (TS5) with 11(!) sessions focusing on this topic:

    • Paleoseismicity, active faulting, surface deformation, and the implications on seismic hazard assessment (Fault2SHA) (co-organized)
    • Understanding fault growth and interaction over a range of spatial and temporal scales
    • Integrated approaches to bridge Long-term Tectonics and Earthquake cycles: Observations, Experiments, and Models (co-organized)
    • Earthquakes, active tectonics, and seismic hazard in regions of slow lithospheric deformation (co-organized)
    • Crucial characteristics of earthquakes that generate tsunamis from geologic observations and numerical models (co-organized)
    • Active Tectonics and Geodynamics of Anatolia
    • Understanding large subduction earthquakes and tsunamigenesis by integrating geological and geophysical observations, laboratory results, and numerical modeling (co-organized)
    • The Mechanics of Faulting from shallow to deep earthquakes: Interplay between multiple length scales. (co-organized)
    • Earthquake foreshocks: identification, observation, modeling, and lessons to be learned (co-organized)
    • Earthquake Source Processes: Recent Advances in Observation, Imaging, and Modeling (co-organized)
    • Long-term evidence from past great earthquakes: critical observations and constraints for seismic hazard assessment (co-organized)

Each of them sounds exciting and worth contributing, so I am looking forward to a packed programm of earthquake tectonic – themed sessions!

However, if you cannot decide where to submit your abstract to, please consider our session on “Paleoseismicity, active faulting, surface deformation, and the implications on seismic hazard assessment” (TS5.1/GM4.5/NH4.16/SM3.10) at the following link:

  • Extended abstract deadline for EGU 2017

    Dear all,
due to technical difficulties, the abstract deadline for the EGU 2017 has been extended until tomorrow, Jan. 12th at 1 pm Central European Time.

  • Active faulting session at EGU 2017: abstract deadline approaching

As every year just after the holidays, the abstract deadline for the EGU General Assembly in Vienna (April 23-28, 2017)  is approaching.  This year, it is on Wednesday, 11 January 2016, 13:00 Central European Time.

If you are still searching for a session to submit your abstract to, please consider our session on “Active faulting, surface deformation, and the earthquake cycle: new
approaches, observations and insights” (TS5.3/EMRP4.3/NH4.9) at the following link:

  • EGU deadline tomorrow

Just a friendly reminder that the deadline for abstract submission for the EGU general assembly 2016 in Vienna is tomorrow, January 13th at 13:00 CET/12:00 GMT. If you are still looking for a session to submit your abstract to, please have a look at our session about Active Faults and the Earthquake Cycle (TS4.2/NH4.16/SM3.8)

By the way, the Vienna Basin is the perfect place to discuss active faults, as you see on our newest gravel pit outcrop. If you interested in having a closer look at this fault during the EGU – let me know…

Hopefully see you soon in Vienna,

    Esther, Kris, Matthieu, Angela

  • Session on Active Tectonics and the Earthquake Cycle at EGU 2014

    Dear all,
just before everybody is leaving for the AGU to San Francisco, we want to draw your attention to our session at the EGU 2014 (27 April – 02 May) in Vienna about:

Active Tectonics and the Earthquake Cycle (TS5.1/NH4.10/SM2.7) co-sponsored by GSA-SGT

Active Tectonics studies may shed light onto the understanding of the long-term and short-term deformation patterns in intraplate domains and along plate boundaries. A wide range of approaches such as paleoseismology, paleogeodesy, paleotsunami investigations, tectonic geomorphology and high-resolution datation methods bring unprecedented constraints on the identification of active structures, the distribution of associated deformation and the size and timing of past earthquakes. This, in turn, may be used to better understand i) the earthquake cycle through the characterization of its inter-seismic, co-seismic and post-seismic periods and ii) related hazard (including earthquake, tsunami and triggered mass movements) through the characterization of recurrence patterns.
This session seeks contributions on the study of earthquake-prone areas in interplate and intraplate regions that combine approaches such as earthquake geology and geomorphology, seismotectonics, geophysical imaging (including GPR and seismics) and remote sensing (including InSAR and LiDAR surveys). We also encourage contributions that incorporate such observations into seismic hazard assessment.

Deadlines are November, 29 for Support Applications and January, 19 for Abstract Submission.

Looking forward to an interesting session and see you in Vienna,
    the conveners,
    Matthieu Ferry, Geosciences Montpellier, France
    Kris Vanneste, Royal Observatory, Belgium
Esther Hintersberger, University of Vienna, Austria

  • Session at AGU 2012 about “Controls on Seismicity and Fault Rupture in Intraplate Regions”

Angela Landgraf (Uni Potsdam), Simon Kübler (LMU Munich), Seth Stein (NW University, IL) and myself would like to draw your attention to our session about “Controls on Seismicity and Fault Rupture in Low-Strain Intraplate Regions” (T010) at the 2012 AGU Fall Meeting 2012 (3 – 7 Dec). We are looking for a variety of contributions from intraplate regions that have experienced earthquakes during Quaternary times and hope for good and interesting discussions with you during the meeting. The submission deadline is quite soon, at 8 August 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT.

Looking forward to see many of you there – Angela, Simon, Seth and Esther more
