Paleoseismology & active tectonics sessions at the IASPEI-LACSC meeting 20-22 June, 2016, San Jose, Costa Rica

From 20-22 June, 2016, the IASPEI – Regional Assembly of the Latin-American and Caribbean Seismological Commission – LACSC will  be held in San Jose, Costa Rica. There will be some very interesting sessions on active tectonics, paleoseismology, seismic hazard, and intraplate faults:

  • Paleoseismology in Central and South America

Conveners: Franck A. Audemard M. (Venezuela), Hans Diederix (Colombia)

Paleoseismology is the key to expanding the record of past earthquakes beyond instrumental and historical seismicity. It is definitely critical to mitigating seismic hazards in densely populated regions by knowing better the recurrence and magnitude of large destructive earthquakes and their effects. We particularly seek contributions and presentations that discuss advances in evaluating, by using a geological approach, the past (Quaternary) seismic activity of faults, as well as the occurrence of their effects on the natural environment, both onshore and offshore, such as sliding, soil liquefaction, remobilization and tsunamis. Studies on geologic effects of earthquakes on pre-hispanic civilizations are also much welcome.

  • Geodesy of Intraplate faults

Conveners:  Héctor Mora Páez (Colombia), Franck A. Audemard M. (Venezuela), Carlos E. Reinoza G. (Venezuela)

Recent temporary and permanent installations of geodetic networks in the Caribbean and Latin America are to shed light on the rate of activity not only of active tectonic margins but also of intra-continental faults, which may not be always smaller or slower than the plate boundary faults. The North Andean Block (NAB) seems to be an interesting natural laboratory in that sense, but The Greater Antilles region may result to be as amazing, as well as regions undergoing strain partitioning. To better bracket the slip rate of these faults is a critical issue in Seismic Hazard Assessments (SHA). We particularly seek presentations that deals with the design, implementation and follow-up of GPS networks in the region for the observation of active intra-continental faults, but also contributions showing slip-rate results that may have an actual impact on SHA.

  • Caribbean Tectonics and Seismic Hazards

Conveners: Jay Pulliam (USA), Franck A. Audemard M. (Venezuela), Eduardo Camacho (Panama), Paul Mann (USA)

Recent temporary and permanent installations of geodetic and seismic instrumentation make the active subduction and strike-slip plate boundaries of the Caribbean/Central America region an easily accessible, natural laboratory for the study of tectonic processes. While understanding these processes here may shed light on tectonics globally, it is also critical to mitigating hazards due to the densely populated region’s recurring and destructive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.  We welcome presentations that discuss advances in earthquake monitoring, modeling, and early warning including prospective studies for purposes of discussion and planning. Submissions related to all of these topics are solicited for this session

Deadline for abstract submission is 15 February, registration closes on 30 April. You can apply for travel support until 31 January.

Thanks to our friend Franck for spreading the news!
