Faculty Positions in the Department of Geological Sciences at Michigan State University

Three Faculty Positions in the Department of Geological Sciences at Michigan State University (two open rank and one endowed professor)
The Department of Geological Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks candidates for three tenure track faculty positions: 1) an Endowed Professor of Solid Earth Geoscience; 2) an open rank position in Hydrologic Sciences, and 3) an open rank position in Geomicrobiology.
We are a rapidly growing department with over $12 Million in committed endowment funds.  The latter two of these positions are linked to the new Global Water Initiative at MSU in which 16 faculty are being hired.  We expect these positions to be filled in Fall 2013. We seek dynamic individuals who will complement existing strengths in the sponsoring departments. MSU has an excellent culture of research collaboration across a range of departments and programs.  See www.glg.msu.edu/faculty-positions.html  for more information.
Vogel Endowed Professor in Solid Earth Geosciences (Associate or Full Professor) We are seeking an outstanding faculty candidate with research experience and background that fall broadly in the field of geodynamics.  The successful candidate will fill the Thomas Vogel Endowed Professorship in Solid Earth Geosciences at the associate- to full-professor rank with tenure. This endowed Professorship is part of an initiative to enhance the Solid Earth program at MSU.  Our priority as part of this initiative is to expand on our existing strengths and continue to build an internationally-recognized program that is consistently competitive for research funding, top-quality graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers.  We invite applicants with broad areas of expertise including, but not limited to, crust/mantle dynamics, geochemistry/geochronology, and/or geophysics.  The successful applicant for this position will be expected to: (1) develop and maintain an externally-funded research program, (2) mentor and advise graduate students and post-doctoral scholars, (3) teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their research focus, and (3) contribute to a collegial, cohesive, and collaborative departmental environment. Questions about this position can be sent to Dr. Kaz Fujita at sechair@msu.edu .
Hydrologic Sciences (Open Rank) The appointment for this position will be in the Department of Geological Sciences and applications are encouraged from all areas of the Hydrologic Sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates with research expertise in: 1) quantifying how changes in climate and land cover impact solute transport and water flux through landscapes; 2) predicting fluid, solute, and heat fluxes at the basin scale; and 3) modeling interactions between climate, water, and ecosystems. Questions about this position can be sent to Dr. Bruno Basso at eeshire@msu.edu  with hydrology in the subject line.
Geomicrobiology (Open Rank) The primary appointment for this position is in the Department of Geological Sciences with a partial appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Applications are encouraged across a broad research context that includes the interface of Earth, environmental, and microbiological processes. Specific research areas could include: 1) quantifying the spatial and temporal interplay between bio/geo/chemical and hydrologic processes; 2) advancing understanding in microbial evolution; 3) assessing the role of microbes in aquatic and terrestrial environments; and 4) understanding microbes in extreme environments. Questions about this position can be sent to Dr. Mike Gottfried ateeshire@msu.edu  with geomicrobiology in the subject line.
We are seeking candidates for these positions that will develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program, teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to a collegial and cohesive departmental environment, and seek collaborative linkages with different units across campus. Review of applications will begin in mid-December, 2012, but will continue until the position is filled.  Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, statement of research interest, teaching philosophy, and the names and contact information for three references to https://jobs.msu.edu.   Faculty will be available at the Fall AGU meeting in San Francisco to meet with select candidates about these positions; please indicate your interest in the AGU career center.   MSU is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer; applications from women and members of under-represented groups are strongly encouraged.  Persons with disabilities have the right to request and receive reasonable accommodation.
