Int’l Palaeoseismological Field Workshop ‘Soft-sediment deformation structures & palaeoseismic phenomena in the SE Baltic Region’ – 2nd announcement out now

The 2nd announcement for the International Palaeoseismological Field Workshop ‘Soft-sediment deformation structures and palaeoseismic phenomena in the South-eastern Baltic Region’ is out now. The workshop will be held from 17 – 21 September, 2018, and is organised by the Lithuanian Geological Survey, Lithuanian Geological Society,  Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and Klaipėda University.

The field workshop will be held in Lithuania and Western Latvia. The main topic regards soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) development caused by glacio-isostatic rebounds and earthquakes. Earthquakes can be reflected in the sedimentary record in layers (seismites) that are characterized by abundant SSDS, commonly including load casts, pseudonodules, ball-and-pillow structures, and genetically associated structures such as flame structures, that give the affected layer (or set of layers) a deformed – sometimes even chaotic – appearance over large lateral distances. Moreover, the workshop will focus on detailed sedimentological description and development of SSDS in different settings and caused by different trigger mechanisms in the Pleistocene and Holocene sediments. In addition, the workshop offers a forum to all participants for presentations and discussions of recent achievements in Quaternary geology, neotectonics, palaeogeography and glacial processes connected to glacio-isostatic rebound. The language of the workshop will be English.

• 17 September (Monday):
  Registration, introduction and key lectures in the Lithuanian Geological Survey (Vilnius). Field excursion: Laiciškėnai quarry (seismites in the Late Weichselian kame sediments). Accommodation in the “Vila Bisena”, Ice brake party (www.vilaBisena.lt).
• 18 September (Tuesday)
  Field trip: Kumečiai quarry and Slinktis outcrop on the Dubysa River (seismites in the Saalian-Weichselian inter-moraine sediments). “Vila Bisena”: evening session of oral and poster presentations.
• 19 September (Wednesday)
  Field trip: Ventės Ragas outcrop (Curonian Lagoon) and Juodikiai quarry (SSDS of problematic genesis), Giruliai mega-landslide (possible relict of paleoseismic event). Accommodation in the Laukdvaris Kaimo Sodyba (www.laukdvaris.lt), evening session of oral and poster presentations.
• 20 September (Thuersday)
  Field trip: sections on the Baltic Sea cliffs between Sarnate and Jūrkalne (Latvia; seismites in the post-glacial and Holocene sediments). Laukdvaris Kaimo Sodyba: final discussion and Workshop Dinner.
• 21 September (Friday)
  Field trip: Dyburiai outcrop on the Minija River (seismites in the Early Weichselian inter-moraine sediments). Arrival to Vilnius on late afternoon.
