SUMMARY:20th Anniversary of 1999 Marmara Earthquakes
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to the international meeting organized by Active Tectonics Research Group (ATAG) of Turkey in commemoration of 20th Anniversary of 1999 Marmara Earthquakes. Following these two devastating earthquakes (1999 Mw 7.4 İzmit and 1999 Mw 7.2 Düzce Earthquakes)\, a vast number of international/national projects carried out in the Marmara Sea region of Turkey and the outcomes of research done contributed significantly to multi-disciplinary studies in active tectonics. The meeting aims to revisit the results of these important number of observations together with new research going on to highlight the current state of seismic hazard in Marmara Sea where the next big earthquakes is expected to occur. \n  \nATAG founded by late Aykut Barka\, organizes annual meetings since 1997 to gather earth scientists and students studying active tectonics of Turkey and neighbouring regions. This year 23. ATAG meeting aims to bring together international earth science community to share the experience gained in many fields of active tectonics. There will be an extensive session dedicated to Active Tectonics of Sea of Marmara: “A thorough review of research conducted for the last 20 years”. All contributions from the following active tectonics related themes are welcome: \n  \n–           Active tectonics of Anatolia and the adjacent regions \n–           Paleoseismology \n–           Seismology\, Seismotectonics \n–           Tectonic Geodesy\, Remote Sensing of Earthquake Deformation \n–           Tectonic Geomorphology \n–           Monitoring and Modelling Crustal Deformation \n–           Marine/Lacustrine Geology and Geochemistry in Active Tectonics \n–           Archaeoseismology \n  \nATAG meeting will be hosted by Istanbul Technical University from October 15 to October 18\, 2019. Opening ceremony lectures will be given by Prof. John Dewey\, Prof. Xavier Le Pichon and Prof. Dan McKenzie. \n  \nDeadline for abstract submission is August 17\, 2019 (3:01 am GMT +3). \n  \nPlease contact Dr. Gülsen Ucarkus to notify your participation or if you have any questions regarding the meeting ( e-mail: ucarkus@itu.edu.tr). \n

SUMMARY:25th Latin-American Colloquium of Geoscience
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 250th birthday of Alexander von Humboldt and the 100th anniversary of the Universität Hamburg this year\, the 25th Latin-American Colloquium of Geoscience will be held at the Universität Hamburg\, Germany\, from September 18 – 21\, 2019. \nThis biennial conference series has advanced as an important international venue to showcase research activity in Latin-American countries supported by the German Science Foundation\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation\, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Science and Technology\, and other funding bodies. Many of the featured collaborative projects are highly interdisciplinary and span from marine geology and geophysics\, structural geology\, paleontology\, mineralogy\, sedimentology to paleoclimate studies\, geomorphology and the impact of humankind on erosion and climate change. Given the challenges that geoscientists are confronted with today\, this Earth System Science format of the conference is timely and helps foment interdisciplinary thinking and the establishment of new alliances. As such the Colloquium follows the Earth System Science approach of Alexander von Humboldt and his efforts to communicate scientific results to the public. \nFor details of the scientific program as well as field trips and guided tours associated with the Colloquium\, please visit the conference website at: \nhttps://www.geo.uni-hamburg.de/en/geologie/ueber-das-institut/lac2019.html

SUMMARY:TopoEurope 2019
DESCRIPTION:Within the Topo-Europe framework\, the ITN SUBITOP organises a workshop on understanding subduction zone topography through modelling of coupled shallow and deep processes. \nTOPO-EUROPE promotes\, coordinates and integrates national research programs on geological surface processes and their implications for continental topography and natural hazards in a coherent European network. SUBITOP is an ITN for training and career development of 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESR) in Geodynamics\, Geophysics\, Geology and Geomorphology.  It has a scientific focus on the dynamics of continental margins where tectonic plates are recycled through subduction.

SUMMARY:Teaching Structural Geology and Tectonics in the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:How to define a successful SG&T curriculum and what are essential components thereof? How to best deal with a constrained BSc curriculum (what content goes where)? How to work with very large class sizes\, how to counter low levels of student engagement and how to manage a lack of (numerical) background knowledge? How to build links to different geosciences disciplines?\nInnovative approaches to teaching structural geology and tectonics and how to best integrate modern teaching techniques (e.g. flipped classrooms\, virtual outcrops\, lecture recordings) and technologies (digital mapping and terrain models\, numerical and analogue modelling\, 3D-4D visualization\, virtual reality\, social media and in-class room experiments).\nField work and strategies on how to defend it against threats from funding cuts\, increasingly rigorous health and safety concerns and efforts to establish virtual field trips. Is teaching field skills outdated? Who will be teaching field skills in the future?\nProfessional careers we are educating for now\, and will be educating for in 25 years (e.g. applied structural geology in geothermal energy extraction/radioactive waste management/CO2 sequestration). What key skills are needed for these jobs?\n\n

SUMMARY:Conference “30 years after Spitak Earthquake: Experience and Perspectives”\, 3-7 Dec\, 2018\, Yerevan
DESCRIPTION:The 1988 Spitak Earthquake with a magnitude of MS6.8 took the life of thousands of people and caused widespread devastation in Armenia. It also ruptured the surface and is one of the best-studied seismic events in the entire Caucasus region. 30 years after the catastrophe\, an conference will be held in Yerevan\, Armenia\, from 3-7 December: “30 years after Spitak Earthquake: Experience and Perspectives“. The meeting will also include a field trip to the epicentral area. Full conference fee is USD 200. Download the flyer here (pdf\, 655 KB). The form for the expression of interest is here (docx\, 19 KB).

SUMMARY:6th Int’l Colloquium Historical earthquakes & paleoseismology\, 24-26 Oct\, 2018\, Han-sur-Lesse (BEL)
DESCRIPTION:The colloquium is the 6th of a series that began in 2013 in Paris with the colloquium “Macroseismicity: sharing and use of historical data”. The main topics are: historical earthquakes\, macroseismology\, archeoseismology\, paleoseismology\, earthquake catalogues and databases\, active faults\, seismotectonics\, neotectonics\, and their contribution to the knowledge of seismic hazard and a better understanding of the long term seismic activity. A specific session will be devoted to earthquake effects in caves. \nConfirmed Invited Keynote Lectures:\n\nAurélia Hubert-Ferrari (Université de Liège): Present-day knowledge and questions about seismic versus aseismic activity of the Anatolian Faults in Turkey integrating historical earthquakes\, paleoseimic studies and creep evidenced by Insar studies.\nHélène Dessales (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris): Analysis of post-earthquakes reconstructions in Pompei (RECAP Program).\nEric Calais (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris): A new paradigm for large earthquakes in stable continental plate interiors.\nKlaus-G. Hinzen (University of Cologne): Elements for a comprehensive archeoseismological study.
