SUMMARY:International Workshop on “Active tectonics and dating”
DESCRIPTION:The magnitude and rate of damaging earthquakes that occur along well-characterized active fault systems are fundamental information in seismic hazard assessment. This is particularly true in slow deforming areas of continental interiors where the return times of most earthquakes are typically longer than the time-window covered by historical chronicles. The present-day fault slip rates in these regions are rarely resolved\, making the evaluation of the seismo-tectonic activity very challenging. \nIn this context\, the characterization and absolute dating of the Quaternary markers (landforms and/or stratigraphical units) offset by or sealing tectonic structures are critical. Hence\, this workshop will cover: \n\nThe techniques and latest improvements of fault activity dating methods to resolve neo-tectonic and paleo-seismological issues\,\nSpecific applications of Quaternary dating methodologies to the characterization of the tectonic activity and past earthquake surface rupture history\,\nand\, in the context of slow-deforming regions\, a half-day session will be dedicated to the advance of the French active fault working groups\, one year after the launch of the “Failles actives in France” (FACT) action\, and in the light of the questions raised after the surface rupturing event of November 11th 2019\, at Le Teil in the Rhone River Valley.\n\nThis international workshop is organized in the framework of the Seismic Ground Motion Assessment project SIGMA-2 (www.sigma-2.net) and of the action (FACT) of the French seismological and geodetic network RESIF (https://www.resif.fr/?lang=en).\nIt will be held in the northern French Alps\, in Praz-sur-Arly\, from June 9 – 11 2020\, and it will include a one-day field trip in the Aiguille rouge massif to visit active fault scarps. \nContact\nPotential attendants should contact Julia Biaggi (julia-externe.biaggi@edf.fr) and\nKevin Manchuel (kevin.manchuel@edf.fr) for constituting a mailing list for future information. \nNext step\n2nd circular (in the course of February) with: \n\ndetails of the thematic sessions and invited talks\npractical information (accommodation\, venue\, arrival/departure\, …)\nlink to dedicated website for registration and payment\n\nDownload the circular here. SUMMARY:SEPM2020 ISGC Workshop: Distinguishing Storms and Tsunamis
DESCRIPTION:A 1-Day workshop investigating the similarities and differences between the sedimentary records of storms and tsunamis. Tsunami and storms threaten coastal lives and infrastructure. Documenting past events within the sedimentary record provides an important means of assessing the hazards associated with storms and tsunamis. However\, distinguishing storm and tsunami deposits within the sedimentary record remains a very difficult problem. Recent work has shown that even storms can produce large infragravity waves thus calling into question basic assumptions about how the two might differ in their sedimentary products. The purpose of this session is to bring together scientists working in the laboratory\, field and with computer simulations on storm and/or tsunami deposits who might be able to shed light on this fundamental problem. We imagine the workshop as a mini-research conference

SUMMARY:Understanding earthquakes using the geological record
DESCRIPTION:This meeting will focus on the interplay between deformation\, metamorphism\, and rheology of the lithosphere. \nModern geophysical research is revealing increasingly complex and spatially variable fault zone behaviours. The properties and deformation of the ductile crust and mantle are controversial\, as is their influence on the overlying faults. Current models indicate a close coupling between metamorphism\, rheology and deformation\, but remain poorly constrained by geological observations. \nThe meeting will unite international experts in geodesy\, seismology\, metamorphism and rheology to characterise and understand the geological controls on fault behaviour\, guiding future studies and advancing our understanding of earthquake hazard. \nSpeaker abstracts will be available closer to the meeting. Recorded audio of the presentations will be available on this page after the meeting has taken place. Meeting papers will be published in a future issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A.

SUMMARY:25th Latin-American Colloquium of Geoscience
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 250th birthday of Alexander von Humboldt and the 100th anniversary of the Universität Hamburg this year\, the 25th Latin-American Colloquium of Geoscience will be held at the Universität Hamburg\, Germany\, from September 18 – 21\, 2019. \nThis biennial conference series has advanced as an important international venue to showcase research activity in Latin-American countries supported by the German Science Foundation\, the German Academic Exchange Service\, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation\, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Science and Technology\, and other funding bodies. Many of the featured collaborative projects are highly interdisciplinary and span from marine geology and geophysics\, structural geology\, paleontology\, mineralogy\, sedimentology to paleoclimate studies\, geomorphology and the impact of humankind on erosion and climate change. Given the challenges that geoscientists are confronted with today\, this Earth System Science format of the conference is timely and helps foment interdisciplinary thinking and the establishment of new alliances. As such the Colloquium follows the Earth System Science approach of Alexander von Humboldt and his efforts to communicate scientific results to the public. \nFor details of the scientific program as well as field trips and guided tours associated with the Colloquium\, please visit the conference website at: \nhttps://www.geo.uni-hamburg.de/en/geologie/ueber-das-institut/lac2019.html
