International meeting in commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the 1999 Marmara Earthquakes

Dr. Gülsen Ucarkus send us the first circular for the following interesting meeting:

We would like to invite you to the international meeting organized by Active Tectonics Research Group (ATAG) of Turkey in commemoration of 20th Anniversary of 1999 Marmara Earthquakes. Following these two devastating earthquakes (1999 Mw 7.4 İzmit and 1999 Mw 7.2 Düzce Earthquakes), a vast number of international/national projects carried out in the Marmara Sea region of Turkey and the outcomes of research done contributed significantly to multi-disciplinary studies in active tectonics. The meeting aims to revisit the results of these important number of observations together with new research going on to highlight the current state of seismic hazard in Marmara Sea where the next big earthquakes is expected to occur.

ATAG founded by late Aykut Barka, organizes annual meetings since 1997 to gather earth scientists and students studying active tectonics of Turkey and neighbouring regions. This year 23. ATAG meeting aims to bring together international earth science community to share the experience gained in many fields of active tectonics. There will be an extensive session dedicated to Active Tectonics of Sea of Marmara: “A thorough review of research conducted for the last 20 years”. All contributions from the following active tectonics related themes are welcome:

–           Active tectonics of Anatolia and the adjacent regions

–           Paleoseismology

–           Seismology, Seismotectonics

–           Tectonic Geodesy, Remote Sensing of Earthquake Deformation

–           Tectonic Geomorphology

–           Monitoring and Modelling Crustal Deformation

–           Marine/Lacustrine Geology and Geochemistry in Active Tectonics

–           Archaeoseismology

ATAG meeting will be hosted by Istanbul Technical University from October 15 to October 18, 2019. Opening ceremony lectures will be given by Prof. John Dewey, Prof. Xavier Le Pichon and Prof. Dan McKenzie.

Deadline for abstract submission is August 17, 2019 (3:01 am GMT +3).

Please contact Dr. Gülsen Ucarkus to notify your participation or if you have any questions regarding the meeting ( e-mail: ucarkus@itu.edu.tr).
